Compliance with new EU regulations for 'Bud-Ekolog' company in 4 months
The construction company 'Bud-Ekolog' needed quick adaptation to changing EU legal requirements regarding emissions and waste management. We conducted a gap analysis, implemented new waste management procedures at 3 construction sites, and trained the team. The entire process took us 4 months. Now the company meets all requirements and is ready for future changes.
Bud-Ekolog S.A., a large construction company from the region, faced the challenge of new EU environmental regulations. They needed quick and concrete actions to avoid penalties and maintain a good reputation. Podlaska Symbioza Biznesu helped them implement the necessary changes within 4 months, ensuring full compliance.
The challenge
At the beginning of 2023, Bud-Ekolog S.A. faced the prospect of tightened EU regulations regarding construction waste management and CO2 emission reduction. Their three key construction sites in the vicinity of Białystok and Ełk were not prepared for these changes, which threatened project halts or high financial penalties, estimated at 34,000 – 78,000 PLN annually.
The company lacked standardized waste segregation procedures and a carbon footprint monitoring system. Existing methods were chaotic and ineffective. Moreover, their internal team lacked the specialized knowledge to quickly implement such complex requirements. There was also a lack of tools to measure and report progress.
Our approach
Our first steps involved visits to all three 'Bud-Ekolog' construction sites. We spoke with managers, foremen, and field workers. We conducted a detailed audit that revealed 13 points of non-compliance with new regulations, especially concerning the segregation of rubble, plastic, wood, and metals. No beating around the bush, we showed where the gaps were and what the real risks were.
Then, together with the management of Bud-Ekolog S.A., we developed an action plan spread over 4 months. We focused on simple and effective solutions, rather than expensive and complicated investments. We focus on action, so the schedule was tight but realistic. The key was the involvement of senior management.
The solution
We implemented a new, clearly described waste management system, including dedicated, marked containers for rubble, metal, plastic, wood, and mixed waste at each of the three construction sites. This allowed for segregation at the source. We also launched a simple, digital system for reporting the quantity and type of waste, accessible via tablet for managers – less paperwork, more precision.
We conducted a series of intensive training sessions for 28 field employees and 4 office staff, teaching them practical segregation principles and new procedures. We showed how it works in practice, not just in theory. Additionally, we created easy-to-understand visual instructions, which we placed in visible locations on the construction sites, so everyone knew what to throw where. Specifics matter, so we focused on visual support.
Results
Thanks to our actions, 'Bud-Ekolog S.A.' achieved full compliance with new EU environmental regulations within 4 months. They avoided penalties and significantly improved the company's image. Specifics matter – the company is now more confident about future inspections and tenders, and has also reduced waste disposal costs by over a quarter. This is eco-logically to profit, because efficiency and responsibility go hand in hand.
